As people have shifted from PC Notebooks to tablets, there is a much richer diversity in tablet operating systems and capabilities.  Here's a quick look at some of latest offerings and innovations by different players in the industry.

On the low end, companies like Xiaomi have come out with cheap though not particularly elegant tablets like the Xiaomi Mi Pad.

For Android lovers, Google has shown what can be done with the USB Type-C connector on the Google Pixel C.

Those that prefer Windows, but want to use USB Type-C, can enjoy the tablets like the Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855.

There are also niche tablets like Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 that are great for enjoying content from Amazon Video.

The Fire HDX 8.9 has a passive stylus but if you want more expressiveness, try the Microsoft Surface Pen for Surface Pro 4 or the Apple Pencil for the iPad Pro.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 shows off what Windows 10 can do on a tablet with unique stylus, keyboard case, and even its own Microsoft Surface Dock.

Not to be outdone, Apple has launched its first Apple Smart Keyboard to match the Apple iPad Pro.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the default display backgrounds for many of these tablets use a bluish shade surrounded by a black plastic frame. Apple is the only one that also offers users a choice between a black or white plastic frame.

The backs of the tablets have more variety of colors, textures, and features. Microsoft is the only one to provide a built-in stand with its Surface tablets.

The good news for users is the variety of sizes available. Apple provides the widest range of sizes, from its gargantuan Apple iPad Pro, to the medium-sized Apple iPad Air 2, all the way to its smaller iPad Mini

Tablets are bringing fresh innovation as more and more people shift from traditional PC to mobile devices.  Unlike PCs which have consolidated to just a few vendors and nowadays have pretty much the same features and look the same, there is a still a flowering of unique tablets with vendors experimenting with differentiating features and business models.
