How USB Power Delivery Charging Goes Between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and DeX Station Connected to the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger

The Samsung's DeX Station gets own power supplied by the Adaptive Fast Charging Charger through Samsung's Adaptive Fast Charging scheme, but the DeX uses USB Power Delivery to quickly charge the Samsung Galaxy S8 over USB Type-C. To see how the DeX, Samsung phone and charger  perform over charging, we have connected the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger directly to the DeX Station using a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, with the Samsung Galaxy S8 attached on to the dock.

We first observed the DeX Station started communicating USB Power Delivery with the Samsung Galaxy S8 over a data role swap to repeatedly declare a single 2.5 watts (5 volts @ 0.5 amps) power profile.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 later requested and established the 2.5 watts (5 volts @ 0.5 amps) power contract with the DeX Station.

After requesting Sink Capabilities from the Samsung Galaxy S8 only did the DeX Station finally display its own source capabilities of 6 watts (5 volts @ 1.2 amps) and 7.8 watts (9 volts @ 0.87 amps).

The Samsung Galaxy S8 could be seen to initially request 6 watts (5 volts @ 1.2 amps) and got accepted by the dock.

Once again the DeX Station offered the same 6 watts (5 volts @ 1.2 amps) and 7.8 watts (9 volts @ 0.87 amps) allowing the Samsung Galaxy S8 to request the higher PDO of 7.8 watts (9 volts @ 0.87 amps) which the dock also complied.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 at power off began pulling 0.7 amps before stepping up to 1.6 amps @ 5 volts in the first 70 seconds of charging. In the next 50 seconds, the phone was turned on and the power drawn switched to around 7.8 watts (8.7 volts @ 0.9 amps). While the phone was in active mode, it eventually pulled around 5.2 watts (8.7 volts @ 0.6 amps) as charging continued.

Note it took almost 50 seconds for the DeX Station to start charging the Samsung Galaxy S8 at a higher current level which is lower than what the phone would get when directly charged from the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger itself (given the DeX Station itself consumes power).

We now look at how the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger supplied power to the DeX Station

The Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger started charging the DeX Station at around 0.5 watts (5 volts @ 0.1 amps) before gradually increasing to about 9.9 watts (9 volts @ 1.1 amps). After 2 minutes, the dock appeared to draw around 9 watts (9 volts @ 1 amps) from the charger.

Compared to using the Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter in this review, the Apple charger supplied higher charging power to the DeX Station over USB Power Delivery. The Samsung Galaxy S8 was also being charged at higher power levels by the DeX Station when connected to the Apple charger.
