Verizon's Newer USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger Enables Both USB Power Delivery and Qualcomm Quick Charge Based Charging
Since releasing the 24W based Verizon USB Type-C Wall Charger with Fast Charge Technology, Verizon now offers the USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger which is a newer version of the previous charger. With up to 27 watts of charging using USB Power Delivery 2.0 technology, the Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger can charge your USB Type-C phones or tablets faster at 9 volts @ 3 amps PDO.

While at the Verizon Store in Dublin, California, we picked up the Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger among the many different types of Verizon chargers being sold including the Verizon USB Type-C Wall Charger with Fast Charge Technology and Verizon Vehicle Charger with Fast Charge Technology.
The Verizon Store also sold some USB certified Type-C vehicle chargers by AT&T including this one.
With an almost similar packaging it can be a bit hard to differentiate between this Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger and the previous model (as seen here). The box was slightly dented at the sides upon purchase but luckily its contents were not damaged.
Despite the newer version, there were no change in pricing for both models along with the same USB Type-C to Type-C cable accessory for connecting the charger to the Type-C device for charging.
The Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger looks very similar to the earlier Verizon USB Type-C Wall Charger with Fast Charge Technology and also supports both USB Power Delivery and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology. The Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger claims to support 5 volts @ 3 amps (15 watts) and 9 volts @ 3 amps (27 watts) power profiles using USB Power Delivery.
Like its previous version the charger also supports 5 volts @ 3 amps (15 watts), 9 volts @ 2.7 amps (24 watts), and 12 volts @ 2 amps (24 watts) using Qualcomm Quick Charge. Note that the USB specs don't allow for a USB Type-C device to support both USB Power Delivery and an alternative protocol such as Qualcomm Quick Charge even though there are several products like this already in the market such as the AUKEY PA-Y11 Amp PD USB-C Wall Charger, Huawei's 24W USB-C Power Adapter, BatPower PD6 and GearMo 75W USB C Power Delivery (PD) Car Charger.
The Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger seems to be USB PD 2.0 certified along with its Type-C cable accessory.
Using the USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs with the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester, we generate the following test results for the Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger.
The USB Power Test App first negotiates a power contract for every PDO supported by the Verizon charger, and increases the load gradually to find the threshold where over current protection (OCP) kicks in and voltage and current start to drop for safety reasons.
The USB Power Test App reports out all the PDO's supported by the Ventev charger and their OCP thresholds. OCP thresholds for the charger are set at about 12% above the maximum current levels for the fixed PDO's.
PDO | OCP (A) |
---|---|
PDO#1 Fixed: 5V 3A | 3.38 |
PDO#2 Fixed: 9V 3A | 3.36 |
The USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs also produces an I-V curve which graphically shows the relationship between voltage and current for each PDO. We can observe current fold-back behavior for the 1st PDO where as the current increases beyond the OCP threshold, the voltage starts to bend down rather than immediately shutting off. The 2nd PDO shows the voltage immediately shuts off when crossing the OCP threshold.
The USB Power Test App can also use the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester integrated with the GW Instek APS-7100 programmable AC power supply to compare the charger's power output vs power input so that power efficiency can be measured and compared to regulatory limits from United States of Energy (DOE) Level VI or European Union's CoC Tier 2 requirements. We can repeat the power efficiency tests for different PDO's, current load conditions, and different AC input ranges, allowing us to get a complete picture of power efficiency ranges across all different usage scenarios.
Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite for the Verizon USB-C (Type C) Wall Charger, it was quite surprising to observe compliance failures for all the tests also which only a few were listed even though the charger shows it is USB PD 2.0 certified so make sure to be extra careful when using this charger.
