Moto G6 Supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 and Proprietary TurboPower Charging Technologies

The Motorola Moto G6 continues Lenovo's strategy of teaming up with Google and Amazon to promote a very affordable Android phone that supports Amazon Alexa. We purchased the Motorola Moto G6 through Amazon as a Prime exclusive phone, meaning that it comes pre-loaded with Amazon Apps and allows you to command Alexa by double pressing the power button.

The Motorola Moto G6 also supports Project Fi, and is super convenient if you need a phone quickly that has data service around the world, allowing you to access Google and Facebook even from China.

The Motorola Moto G6 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 which is supposed to support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. However, Motorola has chosen to support their own TurboPower technology which has in the past been compatible with Qualcomm Quick Charge technology. In the case of the Motorola Moto G6's implementation of Turbo Power technology, both TurboPower and USB Power Delivery 2.0 are supported over the phone's USB Type-C interface. While both technologies can fully charge the phone in under 110 minutes, the TurboPower uses oscillating step function current patterns to achieve this. Another nice feature is that the phone doesn't turn itself on when charging.

Qualcomm Quick Charge technology doesn't seem to be supported that well on the phone.

After purchasing the phone through Amazon Prime, the iconic Motorola logo and brand is used on top of the phone's box, but the side shows Lenovo branding elements, given that China's Lenovo purchased Motorola's phone brand as a way to sell more products into the US market.

Opening up the phone's box, the only protection that you see on the phone is a removable plastic cover over the screen.

The Motorola Moto G6 comes with a USB Type-A based Turbo Power charger, USB Type-A to Type-C cable, SIM card removal tool, and documentation.

The TurboPower charger supports 15 watts, either through 5V@3A, 9V@1.6A, or 12V@1.2A.

The Motorola Moto G6 is very utilitarian and has a plastic feel to it. What it lacks in design aesthetics, it more than makes up in affordability.

Starting up the Motorola Moto G6, we go through the typical Android startup screens.

There are also Motorola and Amazon setup screens you can go through.

Once you get to the main Android screens, you can see that most Google and Amazon Apps have already come pre-loaded.

Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, we can see that the Motorola Moto G6 supports fixed PDO's of 0.5 watts (5 volts @ .1 amps), 0.9 watts (9 volts @ .1 amps) and 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) for charging. Note some compliance failures were observed.
