Sony Releases Its First Phone Supporting USB Power Delivery with the Sony Xperia XZ1

After being one of the few phone brands supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge and MediaTek's PumpExpress, Sony has finally adopted USB Power Delivery technology for fast charging of its phones with the launch of the Sony Xperia XZ1. The Sony Xperia XZ1 has been heavily promoted in Japan and certain regions of Asia where Sony smartphones have a wide fan base. The Sony Xperia XZ1 is among Sony's flagship USB Type-C enabled phones that include the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZ which have supported Qualcomm Quick Charge. By supporting USB Power Delivery, the Sony Xperia XZ1 can now be charged by a lot more chargers in the market.

Note Sony's lower ends phone models like the Sony Xperia XA1 still support MediaTek PumpExpress+ 2.0 based charging over USB Type-C.

Like its Xperia XZ family, the Sony Xperia XZ1 can be charged using the Sony Quick Charger UCH12W, a dual model charger that provides  charging using both Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and MediaTek PumpExpress+ 2.0 technology. It can also be charged by the SoftBank SELECTION USB Type-C Fast Charging AC Adapter which uses Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 over USB Type-C or the Softbank SELECTION USB PD Enabled USB Type-C Fast Charging AC Adapter which uses USB Power Delivery.

Like the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the Sony Xperia XZ1 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Android Oreo platforms as well as Sony's high quality 13MP front and 19MP rear cameras. Other similar features include a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port, 4 GB RAM with 64 GB UFS internal memory, max 256 GB microSDXC slot, high res audio with noise cancellation, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Miracast over Wi-Fi, IP65/68 water resistance, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

While recent Xperia XZ models come without the traditional 3.5mm audio jack, the Sony Xperia XZ1 still provides it that you can still use to conveniently plug in with your legacy audio headphones. On the other hand, you won't find the MHL video interface on the Sony Xperia XZ1  which still exists on earlier Xperia phones like the Z3+ and Z5. The Sony Xperia XZ1 is also not capable of DisplayPort video output unlike the  Samsung Galaxy S8

With a combination of superior hardware, latest technologies, and full featured Android offerings, the Sony Xperia XZ1 is a great choice for Sony fans that want to finally enjoy USB Power Delivery fast charging technology.
