Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C is Front and Center on New Lenovo Products
USB Type-C and Thunderbolt was front and center in a lot of Lenovo's products being displayed at CES 2017.
Lenovo showed the possibilities enabled by Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2017), ThinkPad X1 Yoga (2017), MIIX 720, and Legion Y720.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2017) is great for users needing a light but powerful Ultrabook while the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (2017) is better suited for those needing a 2-in-1 convertible notebook. Both these notebooks sport two Thunderbolt 3 ports which support not only 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 links but also support USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s), DisplayPort 1.2 for 4K video, and USB Power Delivery based charging.
The MIIX 720 has only one Thunderbolt 3 port and is one of the few tablets in the market the use Thunderbolt 3. The gamer oriented Legion Y720 laptop also only has one Thunderbolt 3 port.
USB Type-C is also supported in Lenovo's Moto X family which includes the Moto Z, Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid, Moto Z Play, and Moto Z Play Droid. These phones also support Moto Mods accessories like the JBL SoundBoost Speaker, Moto Insta-Share Projector, Incipio offGRID Power Pack, and Hasselblad True Zoom Camera . Moto Mods combine strong magnets with high speed connectivity and power to enable new accessories and peripherals which only work on Moto X based phones. Note the USB Type-C interface on the Moto X family supports USB Power Delivery for fast charging and USB 3.1 Gen 1 connectivity (but no DisplayPort or other Alternate Modes)
Of course, not everything has gone USB Type-C.
Lenovo also displayed their Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which is the first phone that supports Google Tango based augmented reality through hardware and software that supports motion tracking, area learning, and depth perception. Unfortunately, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro doesn't support USB Type-C but does support Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 based fast charging through its micro-B USB connector.
In the area of Smart Home, Lenovo announced their Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa and Smart Storage devices. The WI-FI and Bluetooth based Lenovo Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa is similar to the Amazon Echo while the Lenovo Smart Storage is a WI-FI/Ethernet/USB NAS that seems to be remarketed towards the Smart Home market.
Still, it's amazing how rapidly Thunderbolt and USB Type-C has been adopted in so many flagship Lenovo products.
