Now You Can Experience the Touch Bar and Four Thunderbolt 3 Speeds on the Apple 13" MacBook Pro (2018)
The Apple 13" MacBook Pro (2018) is one of the new MacBook Pro's released in 2018 to support the latest Intel Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 chipset. With Titan Ridge the Mac should enable DisplayPort 1.4, but as of now it can only use DisplayPort 1.2 which is still similar to the 13" MacBook Pro (2017) which supports the older Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 chipset.
From the previous year's 13-in version, the newer 13" MacBook Pro (2018) also comes with Apple's Touch Bar technology alongside a non Touch Bar version as well as external graphics. The touch bar version of the 13" MacBook Pro (2018) has four Thunderbolt 3 connectors as equivalent to the 15" MacBook Pro (2018) but now supporting the newer and more powerful 8th Generation Intel processor, a major upgrade from the Intel Kaby Lake (7th Generation) processor on previous models. With quad core processor, the touch bar version of the 13" MacBook Pro (2018) should be much faster than dual core on the 13" MacBook Pro (2017).
Other than the touch bar, not much change in design is seen between the touch bar version of the 13" MacBook Pro (2018) and its 2017 predecessor with both screen and keyboard looking a lot similar to each other.
The four Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C ports are located on both sides of the Mac with two adjacent connectors on each side supporting Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s), USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s), DisplayPort 1.2 to connect with 4k@60hz displays, and uses USB Power Delivery 2.0 technology for charging. These Thunderbolt 3 ports can also be used to charge the Mac itself. For own charging, the Mac can use the Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter that supports USB Power Delivery that ships with the Mac.
Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, we can see that the touch bar version of the 13" MacBook Pro (2018) supports 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) and 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps) fixed PDO's as well as variable power supply of 14.25 to 63 watts range (4.75-21 volts @ 3 amps) and 60 watts battery power (@4.75-21 volts) for charging. Note some compliance failures were observed.
