Earlier, we did some videos on how the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G charged using Qi technology after the phone was first purchased. After 20 charging cycles and upgrading the phone software version to G977NKOU2ASJ1, let's look again at the charging behavior.
Here we use the GRL-C2 USB PD Tester and GRL-PSP Power Analyzer software to test and analyze the charging behavior.
We first tested the Galaxy S10 5G with the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand which itself is powered using the Samsung 25W PD 3.0 PPS Type-C Charger. Based on a previous review where we tested the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand with the Samsung Galaxy Note10+, we expect to see faster charging as well with the Galaxy S10 5G.
We first charge the Galaxy S10 5G with the battery depleted to 2% and the display and WI-FI kept active. Here we can see that the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand initially pulls ~17.5W from the Samsung 25W PD 3.0 PPS Type-C Charger, but later pulls ~7.5W. During the Galaxy Note10+'s 'Cool Down' mode, the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand consumes between ~9.5W to ~4.7W in periodic cycles which helps to regulate the phone temperature. During the Galaxy S10 5G's 'Cool Down' mode, the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand consumes a steady ~7.5 W which results in about the same charging time but lower battery temperature as the Galaxy Note10+.
If we look specifically at the Galaxy S10 5G's battery charging voltage and current, we can see that during the initial 'Fast Charge' mode, the battery is charging at ~9W.
The Galaxy S10 5G battery then charges at about ~4W during the 'Cool Down' mode and this results in overall slow Qi charging results when the phone's display and WI-FI are kept active.
When charging the Galaxy S10 5G (again starting at 2% battery charge with display and WI-FI kept active) with the Hama 15W Turbo Fast Charge Wireless Charger or Verizon 10W Wireless Charging Pad, we see overall lower charging power compared to the Samsung 15W Wireless Charger Stand. These Qi charging pads initially pull 10W during the 'Fast Charge' mode, and then cycles between 10W and 5W during the 'Cool Down' mode.
