As the smartphone charging wars in China continues, Oppo upped the ante with the OPPO 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 AC Charger which works with the OPPO Reno Ace.

Let's take a closer look at how SuperVOOC works using the GRL-C2 USB PD Tester and GRL-PSP Power Analyzer software from Granite River Labs.

The SuperVOOC charging technology uses the D+/D- pins for the charger to communicate with the phone since USB Power Delivery is not used.  We can see that there is increased D+/D- activity when the VBUS voltage increases to 9.5V during the initial fast charging stage.

During this fast charging stage which lasts for only about 6 seconds, we can see that VBUS power peaks at 55W (below the 65W claimed by the technology).  However, we see that the Android operating system reports that the phone's battery only charges at about 22.5W for that same time period.

For that brief 6 seconds of 55W charging, we don't see much effect on speeding up battery charging.  In fact, it took about 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery since only about 6 watts is used to charge the phone for most of the charging cycle.

The OPPO Reno Ace takes about 6.6 hours to discharge a full battery completely while the display is on compared to 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery completely.

While the OPPO 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 AC Charger is nice differentiating feature to market, we don't really see this technology used to quickly charge the OPPO Reno Ace.
