Zooming In on the ZTE Nubia Z17 Phone Supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge 4
Being the first to promote the latest Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology, the Nubia Z17 Android phone by ZTE is finally here and we couldn't wait to get our hands on it.
Nubia's is ZTE's premium phone brand which aims to adopt the latest technologies like Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ which the Nubia Z17 does over its USB Type-C connector that also supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) speeds. With Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+, the Nubia Z17 can be charged quickly using either a Quick Charge 3 charger, new Quick Charge 4 charger, or USB Power Delivery based charger. Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 also offers 20% faster charging and 5% cooler charging than Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.
We tried to purchase the Z17 directly online from JD.com in China but it was already sold out given its popularity. So we had to make reserve a purchase through JD.com and eventually received the phone after a week's time.
Our Nubia Z17 came in a simple black box with the Nuoio logo highlighted in red.
The red inner side of the box contrasts nicely with the black exterior. The main accessories include an AC charger, USB Type-A to Type-C cable, USB Type-C to 3.5 mm audio adapter cable, SIM card, SIM removal pin, and documentation.
The Nubia Z17 only comes with a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 charger that supports 18 watts (12 volts @ 1.5 amps), 18 watts (9 volts @ 2 amps) and 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps) charging. You can use the USB Type-A to Type-C cable accessory to connect this charger to the phone.
The Nubia Z17 follows the trends of several other smartphone players who have removed the 3.5 mm audio jack. Instead you need to use a USB Type-C based headphone like the CDLA Digital Earphones or JBL Reflect Aware C. You can still connect your 3.5 mm audio headphones to the Z17 using the USB Type-C to 3.5 mm audio adapter accessory that comes with the phone.
The Nubia Z17 has a large screen measuring at 5.5 inches that comes with a 1080x1920 resolution and an edge-to-edge panel. It is a really good looking phone that runs on the latest Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 processor, but lacks an SD card slot.
The front of the phone features a 16MP camera while the back houses a 12MP and 23MP combo camera. These cameras also claim to support 4K video capture at 2160p@30fps.
The Nubia Z17 also comes built in with a Dolby Atmos speaker that offers high quality audio along with noise cancelation feature.
The Nubia Z17 has a non-removable 3250mAh Lithium-ion polymer battery, and also supports NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 LE and fast 802.11 b/g/n/ac wireless connectivity.
We'll see how the Nubia Z17 works with other chargers in several upcoming reviews.
