Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Forgoes USB Type-C and But Still Supports Fast Charging

Despite Xiaomi's top of the line Mi 5 being the first USB Type-C phone that also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and the Redmi flagship Redmi Pro, Xiaomi has taken a more traditional approach with its popular mainstream model, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.  Companies seem to be positioning USB Type-C initially as a premium feature for flagship phones.

Launched in China but not yet in India, the Redmi Note 4 is based on Mediatek's Deca-core 2.1 GHz MT6797 Helio X20 which helps explains why it doesn't use Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology.  Instead, the Redmi Note 4 uses a traditional micro-B USB connector and a fast charging scheme that is likely based on MediaTek's PumpExpress technology.

MediaTek's PumpExpress technology promises that a PumpExpress based 10 watts (5 volts @ 2 amps) charger can bring a phone to 75% charge in 30 minutes.  Unfortunately, PumpExpress technology is not as widespread as USB Power Delivery or Qualcomm Quick Charge, making it less likely you can find another compatible PumpExpress charger around the house or at work.

You can also buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 for an amazing $175 from eBay with Google Play Store pre-installed.
