Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger Offers Fast 27W USB-C Charging with USB Power Delivery For Mobile Devices

The Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger can be used to keep your USB Type-C devices and other peripherals charged up inside your car. The charger supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 technology over its USB Type-C output port for up to 27W to quickly charge recent Apple iPhone's and iPad's that can use USB Power Delivery like the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and 11-inch iPad Pro (2018) or Android phones such as the Google Pixel 4 XL and Samsung Galaxy Note10+. The other non USB Power Delivery based USB Type-A port on the charger offers up to 5W power to charge various peripherals.

Through USB Power Delivery over Type-C, the Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger states that it can support charging using common USB Power Delivery profiles of 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 27 watts (12 volts @ 2.25 amps). The charger also advertises the USB-IF logo on its box which means that it has been USB-IF certified.

The Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger comes without any cable accessory which means you will need to carry along your own cable to plug in to the charger.

To observe the power capabilities of the Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger, we used the USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs with the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester to generate the following test results.

The USB Power Test App first negotiates a power contract for every PDO supported by the Tama 32W USB PD Car Charger, and increases the load gradually to find the threshold where over current protection (OCP) kicks in and voltage and current start to drop for safety reasons.

The USB Power Test App reports out all the PDO's supported by the Tama charger and their OCP thresholds. OCP thresholds for the charger are set at about 17-20% above the maximum current levels for the PDO's.

Using the USB Power Test App and FLIR thermal imaging tools, we measured the heat emitted by the Tama charger as seen in the following temperature graph for the highest 12V, 2.25A PDO, which recorded max temperature of around 44 degree Celsius.

Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, we can confirm that the Tama charger supports the following fixed PDO's as claimed- 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 27 watts (12 volts @ 2.25 amps). Note some compliance failures were also observed for this charger.
