The Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter was launched to support the Apple 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2016) but the charger can also work with other non Apple products like the LG G6 phone which also supports USB Power Delivery technology. To see how well this charger works with the phone when directly connected with a USB Type-C to Type-C cable.
The Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter starts communicating with the LG G6 over USB Power Delivery by constantly showing that it supports 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) power profile.
The LG G6 eventually requests to pull 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) after some time which is accepted by the charger.
The Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter later offers not only the 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) it initially declared but also two other power profiles : 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 86 watts (20 volts @ 4.3 amps).
With that the LG G6 requests to pull 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) which the charger then accepts.
With the LG G6's battery being fully drained, the phone only starts charging after 70 seconds at 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) but with a frequent drop in the current as the battery gets its initial charge. Charging only starts to stabilize after the next 40 seconds to charge at around 14.4 (9 volts @ 1.6 amps).
