The Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter was launched to support the Apple 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2016) but the charger can also work with other non Apple products like the HTC 10 phone which also supports USB Power Delivery technology. Here we see how well this charger works with the phone when directly connected with a USB Type-C to Type-C cable.

We can see that the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter initiates USB Power Delivery negotiations over a repeated display of a single 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) source capability.

Multiple hard resets can be seen to happen in between negotiations before the 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) power contract is finally established between the HTC 10 and the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter.

The Apple charger is then observed later on supporting two other power profiles of 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 86 watts (20 volts @ 4.3 amps) in addition to the 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) it initially declared.

We also notice that each time after a hard reset, the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter always repeats the same initial USB Power Delivery protocol negotiation cycle with the HTC 10 by offering a single 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) power profile. The HTC 10 will then go on to request this 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) from the Apple charger.

It takes a while for the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter to constantly display its full power profiles of 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps), and 86 watts (20 volts @ 4.3 amps).

Despite this, the HTC 10 shows that it still insists on 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) from the Apple charger.

While the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter charges the HTC 10 on a fully drained battery, we can confirm that it takes over 40 seconds for the phone to finally charge properly at around 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) with the charger.
