With a recent review showing a USB Power Delivery based Apple charger being well received by the Apple iPad Pro, we will now see if it also works with the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter that comes with the Apple 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2016).
The Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery test software clearly indicates the charging transaction between the Apple iPad Pro and the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter.
As shown, the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter initially declares a power profile of 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) as required by the Apple iPad Pro.
The Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter further declares 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 60 watts (20 volts @ 3 amps), on top of the initial 12 watts power profile.
As expected, the Apple iPad Pro requests the same charging power of 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps).
The oscilloscope confirms the Apple iPad Pro draws around 5 volts @ 2.4 amps from the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter when fully charged.
Similar to the Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter, the Apple 87W USB-C Power Adapter also provides 12 watts of charging to the Apple iPad Pro over USB Power Delivery.
