Not Able to Use GoPro Quik on Mac to Import Content or Update the GoPro HERO5 Black
The GoPro HERO5 Black divides a long video recording into separate 4GB files (see related review) so you need to use software like the GoPro Quik Desktop to stitch all videos files together and edit them. You can also use GoPro Quik to perform the latest firmware updates to your GoPro HERO5 Black.
Unfortunately, we were unable to get the Mac version of the GoPro Quik to work with the GoPro HERO5 Black or SD cards that had been used by the camera.
We downloaded the GoPro Quik Desktop version from the GoPro webpage.
After download was complete, we installed the Quik.pkg application.
Once you open the Quik Application, you can create or log in using your GoPro account.
After logging in, we received notification that an update was available for the GoPro HERO5 Black.
We first had to make sure the camera's battery was charged and an SD card was inserted.
Unfortunately, we were unable to complete this update despite multiple attempts. After contacting GoPro support, they recommended that we save the firmware update into the SD card and manually perform the update as per the instructions below.
We were able to download the UPDATE.zip file to save it into the SD card and successfully update the firmware although it would have been a lot easier using the Quik Application to do this if it actually worked.
Unfortunately, the Quik Application failed us in other ways as well. After connecting the GoPro HERO5 Black to the Mac, it got stuck while trying to download the GoPro video content from the SD card.
The GoPro Quik Application was also unable to find and download any GoPro content stored on an external SD card inserted into the Mac or saved on a drive. The Mac used was a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013).
