The Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger Can Be Used to Rapidly Charge Your Latest Samsung or Xiaomi Phone
The Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ (QC4+) technology for rapid charging up to 27W over USB Type-C. Through QC4+, the Hama charger can use USB Power Delivery 3.0 based PPS (Programmable Power Supply) and Augmented PDO's to quickly charge Qualcomm Snapdragon based phones that support PPS and can take advantage of the technology to optimize charging speed, performance and temperature like the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ and Galaxy S10 5G, Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, and LG V30.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology also addresses compatibility with other phones that support non-PPS Power Delivery like the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max or Android phones such as the Google Pixel 4 XL and Samsung Galaxy S10+. To maximize compatibility, the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger also supports phones using Qualcomm Quick Charge instead of USB Power Delivery like the LG, HTC, ZTE and Motorola phones.
Here we take a closer look at the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger which displays the QC4+ logo on its packaging to indicate that the charger has been Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ certified.
You won't get any cable accessory inside the packaging of the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger.
The Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger allows max 27 watts output through USB Power Delivery using fixed PDO's (Power Delivery Objects) of 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 27 watts (12 volts @ 2.25 amps) as well as variable power of 9.9-17.7 watts (3.3~5.9 volts @ 3 amps) and 9.9-33 watts (3.3~11 volts @ 3 amps) power profiles.
By supporting 27 watts, the charger can provide fairly decent charging to even tablets and smaller notebook computers like Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro (2018) and MacBook (Early 2016).
In case you are looking for a similar charger to be used in your car, you may want to consider the Hama 27W QC4+ Car Charger, also supporting 27W based QC4+ technology.
To observe the power capabilities of the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger, we used the USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs with the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester to generate the following test results.
The USB Power Test App first negotiates a power contract for every PDO supported by the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger, and increases the load gradually to find the threshold where over current protection (OCP) kicks in and voltage and current start to drop for safety reasons.
The USB Power Test App reports out all the PDO's supported by the Hama charger and their OCP thresholds. OCP thresholds for the charger are set at about 15-16% above the maximum current levels for the PDO's.
PDO | OCP |
---|---|
PDO#1 Fixed: 5V 3A | 3.48 |
PDO#2 Fixed: 9V 3A | 3.48 |
PDO#3 PPS: (3.3~5.9)V 3A | 3.46 |
PDO#4 PPS: (3.3~11)V 3A | 3.48 |
The USB Power Test App takes this data to produce an I-V curve which graphically shows the relationship between voltage and current for each PDO. Interestingly, unlike other chargers that support PPS (Programmable Power Supply), no current fold-back behavior is observed for all the PDO's. We can see the voltage immediately shuts off once the current crosses the OCP threshold rather than curving down.
The USB Power Test App can also use the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester integrated with the GW Instek APS-7100 programmable AC power supply to compare the charger's power output vs power input so that power efficiency can be measured and compared to regulatory limits from United States of Energy (DOE) Level VI or European Union's CoC Tier 2 requirements. We can repeat the power efficiency tests for different PDO's, current load conditions, and different AC input ranges, allowing us to get a complete picture of power efficiency ranges across all different usage scenarios.
Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, some compliance failures were observed for the Hama 27W QC4+ AC Charger.
