Charge Your PC and Phone Together with the Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger with USB Power Delivery

The Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger can be an alternative way to charge both your USB Type-C based PC and phone at the same time. This is an inexpensive AC wall charger that has each a USB Type-C and a USB Type-A output to offer a total of 51 watts charging. You can connect your Mac or PC for up to 39 watts of charging over USB Type-C as well as link up your phone over USB Type-A for 12 watts of charging.

The Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger is certified by USB-IF through the official Certified USB logo printed on the front of the box and on the charger itself. Note if you happen to look for other similar chargers with different power capabilities, you can also consider the Choetech PD32-1C1U 32W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger and Choetech PD72-1C3U 72W 4-Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger, both of which are also USB-IF certified. Even though the Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger shows it is USB-IF certified, it fails many USB compliance tests (see more details at the bottom of this review) so be extra careful when using this charger.

Note that while the Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger supports USB Power Delivery based charging, it can also support Qualcomm Quick Charge technology to charge Qualcomm Quick Charge enabled phones (click here to see how we tested this charger with the Xiaomi Mi 5 phone).

As seen with the other models, Choetech has a tendency to not include a USB Type-C charging cable accessory which could have been very convenient. Rather the charger just came with a instruction sheet and a bookmark. Just make sure to bring along your own cable to connect your device to the charger.

The single USB Type-C port supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 based charging using 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 39 watts (15 volts @ 2.6 amps) power profiles. From our own testing using the Xiaomi Mi 5 phone, we could see that this charger also enables charging using Qualcomm Quick Charge technology (click here to see more).

The USB Type-A port offers 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) of legacy charging for your phone or tablet when connected.

You can use the two standard foldable prongs behind the charger to plug into a AC wall outlet for charging.

We used the USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs with the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester to generate the following test results for the Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger.

The USB Power Test App first negotiates a power contract for every PDO supported by the Choetech charger, and increases the load gradually to find the threshold where over current protection (OCP) kicks in and voltage and current start to drop for safety reasons. After we ran this test the charger unfortunately broke down and we were unable to perform further testing on the charger.

Port2 Plot

The USB Power Test App reports out all the PDO's supported by the Choetech charger and their OCP thresholds. Note that 36 watts (12 volts @ 3 amps) power profile is missing on the charger. OCP thresholds for the charger are set at about 20% above the maximum current levels for the fixed PDO's.

PDOOCP (A)
PDO#1 Fixed: 5V 3A3.67
PDO#2 Fixed: 9V 3A3.64
PDO#3 Fixed: 12V 3A3.64
PDO#4 Fixed: 15V 2.6A3.17

The USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs takes this data to produce an I-V curve which graphically shows the relationship between voltage and current for each PDO. We can observe current fold-back behavior where as the current increases beyond the OCP threshold, the voltage starts to curve down rather than immediately shutting off.

IV Curve

Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, several compliance failures were observed for the Choetech PD51-1C1U 51W Dual Port USB Type-C PD Wall Charger. Given that the charger fails many USB compliance tests even though it shows it is USB-IF certified, do take better caution when using this charger.
