Apple Store Shows Off Its First Active USB Power Delivery Charger with the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL
The Apple Store has started featuring its first USB Type-C chargers including the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL which supports active USB Power Delivery 2.0.
The mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL comes in premium Apple Store style packaging.
Inside the packaging is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to Type-A cable (no Lightning cables unfortunately).
The mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL now has a fabric covering with a similar color as the Native Union Smart 4 Charger, another USB Type-C charger introduced in the Apple Store around the same time.
The mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL has a USB Type-C port that can be used for both charging the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL and also charging other devices. The USB Type-C port uses USB Power Delivery to support 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps), 30 watts (15 volts @ 2 amps), and 30 watts (20 volts @ 1.5 amps) power profiles in both charging directions.
The USB Type-A port supports 12 watts (5 volts @ 2.4 amps) to charge other devices.
The mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL has LED lights on the side to indicate battery levels which you can check by pressing the round button next to it.
It's great to see USB Power Delivery enabled power banks like the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL finally make it to the Apple Store. With 30 watts, the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL should be able to support the Apple iPhone X and iPhone 8, as well as the latest iPad Pro's, MacBook Pro's, and MacBook's.
Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, interestingly we find that the mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL actually supports a fifth non rated PDO of 30 watts (12 volts @ 2.5 amps) along with 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps), 30 watts (15 volts @ 2 amps), and 30 watts (20 volts @ 1.5 amps) for charging. Note some compliance failures were observed.
