WD My Passport SSD- A Good Blend of USB 3.1 Gen 2 Super Speed and Old School Elegance in a Single Portable Type-C Storage Drive

The WD My Passport SSD is a recent effort by Western Digital Corporation (WD) to keep up with the latest USB Type-C technology. Since acquiring SanDisk and Hitachi businesses, WD has also been doing well with its highly popular My Passport portable storage solution range and shows off the synergies with SanDisk SSD technology.

The WD My Passport SSD shows off an external portable SSD drive supporting faster USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s) speeds over the USB Type-C interface. It is closely related to major rival Samsung Portable SSD T5, another similar product that has almost the same capabilities and pricing. By comparison, the max 515 MB/s data transfer rate of the WD My Passport SSD is slightly lower than 540 MB/s on the Samsung Portable SSD T5 which also offers up to 2 TB storage capacity as opposed to only 1 TB in WD's highest range. In a similar way, both the Samsung and WD drives provide password protection for their drive's content using AES 256-bit hardware based encryption technology.

The WD My Passport SSD stands out the most from its vintage like outer casing that looks very sophisticated. The black and silver partitions provide a good blend of colors that nicely contrast each other.

The WD My Passport SSD comes with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C based port that you can use to plug in a USB Type-C to Type-C or USB Type-A to Type-C cable to connect to your PC or Mac with USB Type-C and A ports.

The WD My Passport SSD comes preformatted using exFAT which is readable by PC's, Mac's, and certain phones like the LG G5. For other phones like the LG Google Nexus 5X, you will need to format this drive to MS-DOS (FAT).

The WD My Passport SSD is light and compact which makes it easy to bring on your travels while providing high speed file transfers over USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C and SSD technology.
