LeEco Next Generation of Smartphones Continue to Push the Edge of USB Type-C
LeEco (formerly LeTV) has been one of the most aggressive companies in supporting the latest high speed interfaces in their first generation series of smartphones.
The Le 1 and Le 1s were one of the first USB Type-C phones in the market but used Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 rather than USB Power Delivery to support quick charging and only supported USB 2.0 speeds. For video, these phones didn't support DisplayPort over USB Type-C and instead use MHL 2.0.
With the Le Max, LeEco also added the new 60Ghz Wireless HD standard to support lagless wireless 1080p video displays in addition to MHL 2.0 over USB Type-C.
With the Le 1 Pro, LeEco introduced MHL 3.0 to support 4K resolutions over USB Type-C but doesn't have Wireless HD.
Now LeEco has released their second generation of smartphones and like the HTC 10 and the LG G5, has taken advantage of the new features enabled by USB Type-C while abandoning MHL and Wireless HD technology altogether. The Le 2, Le 2 Pro, Le Max 2 support USB 2.0 and USB Power Delivery (while also supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 on the Qualcomm based Le Max 2),. They also support USB Audio over USB Type-C (which they term as CDLA) which takes advantage of USB Power Delivery to provide power to USB Type-C audio headphones like LeEco's new CDLA Digital Earphones and CDLA Digital Noise Cancelling Headphones or the JBL Reflect Aware C. LeEco is the first major phone vendor to have replaced the 3.5 mm audio jack with USB Type-C altogether.
LeEco has emerged as one of the leaders in implementing USB Type-C technology in smartphones, implementing advanced USB Type-C technologies earlier than most other smartphone makers. No doubt this will influence other smartphone makers in China to do the same.
