How the LG G7 ThinQ Phone Charges with the Mediasonic QC 2.0 50W 5 Port USB Charger with Both Qualcomm Quick Charge and Normal USB Charging

The LG G7 ThinQ supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology to be able to use USB Power Delivery 3.0, PPS (Programmable Power Supply), and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology for charging over USB Type-C. Here we observe how the phone works with the third party Mediasonic QC 2.0 50W 5 Port USB Charger which supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 based charging. 

To see how charging happens over Qualcomm Quick Charge, we first plugged in the LG G7 ThinQ to the Mediasonic's Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 enabled port which supports 5 volts @ 2.4 amps, 9 volts @ 1.8 amps and 12 volts @ 1.6 amps. The voltage started off on a 5 volts rail while current was initially pulled at about 0.5 amps by the phone while on a dead battery. After the first 10 seconds, the phone began to trickle charge during which it also pulled current up to about 1.8 amps. The current then only settled out once the voltage went up to 9 volts for the phone to finally get around 13.5 watts (9 volts @ 1.5 amps) charging by the Mediasonic charger. Click here to download the trace captured by the GRL-A1 power analyzer to see more details.

Now let's see how the phone charged on a dead battery when connected to one of the four non Qualcomm Quick Charge enabled ports on the Mediasonic charger which supports 5 volts @ 2 amps charging from each port. Similarly over a 5 volts rail starting voltage upon plugin, the phone also initially pulled about 0.5 amps current. The current then rose up to reach around 1.8 amps after the first 10 seconds as the voltage slightly decreased to about 4.9 volts resulting in about 8.8 watts of steady state charging. As seen above, the LG G7 ThinQ can charge faster at 9 volts through Qualcomm Quick Charge as compared to 5 volts legacy USB charging. The phone also charged similar to its own shipped LG 16W QC Charger using Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 as seen here. Also observe that during Qualcomm Quick Charge charging the phone used very aggressive power management schemes such that even while the charger is connected to the phone, the current repeatedly goes down close to zero at repeated intervals.
