The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max Exceeds Own 18W Charging to Reach Max 22.5W Over USB Power Delivery
The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is the first iPhone to obtain the fastest charging up to 22.5W using USB Power Delivery technology. This is also the first iPhone along with the iPhone 11 Pro that ship with a USB Type-C power adapter and USB-C to Lightning cable.
See this review on how we tested the iPhone 11 Pro Max max charging power to reach 22.5W, which is 25% higher than the 18W max charging power found on the iPhone XS Max. Also check out how the iPhone 11 Pro Max works with different types of Qi chargers in this review.
Both the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max models are very much similar except that the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a bigger display with higher resolution and up to 15 Watts-Hours battery capacity. Among the new features found on these 2019 iPhone's such as a tri[ple rear camera setup, a 4K front camera and the newer and faster Apple A13 chipset with iOS 13.
Here's a quick look at when we purchased the iPhone 11 Pro Max at an Apple store recently.
Let's see now how we unboxed the iPhone 11 Pro Max which has an almost identical packaging as the iPhone 11 Pro.
This iPhone 11 Pro Max model supports 64GB RAM as well as Qi wireless charging, eSIM technology and dual SIM card slots.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max ships with the same accessories as the iPhone 11 Pro which includes a Apple 18W USB Type-C AC power adapter, USB Type-C to Lightning cable and a Lightning based audio headset. The Apple 18W PD Charger also supports the same 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps) and 18 watts (9 volts @ 2 amps) power profiles through USB Power Delivery. Since the iPhone 11 Pro Max only ships with an Apple 18W PD Charger, you need a higher wattage USB Power Delivery charger to take advantage of the 22.5W max charging.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with a 6.5 in screen and is overall slightly bigger and heavier than the iPhone 11 Pro.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max still uses the Lightning connector supporting USB Power Delivery similar to the iPhone 11 Pro.
Both the iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro share a similar set of 12MP triple rear cameras.
Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, we can see that the iPhone 11 Pro Max supports charging using fixed PDO of 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), battery power of 24.75 watts (4.75-15.75 volts range) and variable power supply of 4.75-15.75 volts @ 2.62 amps. Compliance failures were also observed for the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
