HDMI got a boost at CES 2017 with the announcement of HDMI 2.1 which supports 8K@60hz and 4K@120hz as well as Dynamic HDR which can optimize HDR parameters for optimized video quality depending on the scene, allowing HDR optimization to be done even at every video frame.

HDMI also has announced support of HDMI Alternative Mode over the USB Type-C connector.  Cypress was demonstrating this technology using a prototype Blu-ray player from Panasonic.  This Blu-ray player had a USB Type-C connector which could output HDMI 1.4 though a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter cable to any HDMI display.

Both Panasonic and Cypress were heavily promoting this HDMI over USB Type-C technology.

As with any new technology, it will take a while before these get into the hands of consumer but it's good to know what the HDMI community is working on releasing over the next few years.
