The Google Universal Type-C Charger 60W was originally released with the Google Chromebook Pixel (2015) but you can use it for many other devices supporting USB Power Delivery like the Microsoft Surface Book 2. By offering 5V/12V/20V over 3 amps to provide either 15, 36, or 60 watts, let's see how much power the Google charger actually delivers to the Surface convertible notebook PC using USB Power Delivery when connected together over the USB Type-C interface. 

Using the GRL-USB-PD-A1 analyzer from Granite River Labs, we take a closer look at the USB Power Delivery Protocol transactions. The Google Universal Type-C Charger 60W initially claims to provide the following power profiles: 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 36 watts (12  volts @ 3 amps), and 60 watts (20 volts @ 3 amps) over USB Power Delivery to the Microsoft Surface Book 2 with a 5% battery charge.

We can see the Microsoft Surface Book 2 first requests 39 watts (20 volts @ 1.95 amps) which the Google charger then accepts.

We can also observe the Microsoft Surface Book 2 behaving as a Sink upon the Google charger’s request and supporting the power profiles of a Fixed 25 watts (5 volts @ 5 amps), Variable 5-20 volts and Operational Power of 39 watts. This is then followed by a Data Role Swap that leads to the PC initiating Discover Identity and SVIDs Vendor Defined Messages with the charger.

The power graph shows that the Google Universal Type-C Charger 60W successfully provides around 38.8 watts (20.4 volts @ 1.9 amps) to charge the Microsoft Surface Book 2 from initial plugin when the PC is 5% charged and powered on.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 can work effectively with the Google Universal Type-C Charger 60W at around the highest charging level offered by Microsoft’s own Surface power adapter.
