The AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger has an unconventional split design that combines both USB Type-C and Type-A outputs into a single compact charger.

The AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger's dual Type-A ports are located at the top and bottom of a detachable adapter module and support AUKEY's own branded AiPower Adaptive Charging technology and provides a maximum power of 5 volts @ 2.4 amps per port (5 volts @ 3 amps combined if both USB Type-A ports are used at the same time).

If you remove the adapter module, you'll find the USB Type-C port that supports USB Power Delivery 2.0 that outputs up to 29 watts with these power profiles: 5 volts @ 3 amps, 9 volts @ 3 amps, 14.5 volts @ 2 amps.

Here we take a closer look as we unpack the AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger from the box.

The AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger comes with the standard 24-month product warranty and instruction manual.

The AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger is a very compact option if you need USB Power Delivery through USB Type-C but still want to have USB Type-A ports available. Note this means you will not be able to charge your USB Type-C and USB Type-A devices at the same time and you'll need to find a way to not lose the detachable adapter module when not in use.

We can see how the AUKEY PA-Y7 USB Type-C Wall Charger's power profile looks like using the USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs with the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester to generate the following test results.

The USB Power Test App first negotiates a power contract for every PDO supported by the Aukey charger, and increases the load gradually to find the threshold where over current protection (OCP) kicks in and voltage and current start to drop for safety reasons.

Port2 Plot

The USB Power Test App reports out all the PDO's supported by the Aukey charger and their OCP thresholds. OCP thresholds for the charger are set at about 17-48% above the maximum current levels for the fixed PDO's.

PDOOCP (A)
PDO#1 Fixed: 5V 3A3.56
PDO#2 Fixed: 9V 3A3.53
PDO#3 Fixed: 14.5V 2A2.97

The USB Power Test App from Granite River Labs also produces an I-V curve which graphically shows the relationship between voltage and current for each PDO. We can observe current fold-back behavior for the 1st and 2nd PDO's where as the current increases beyond the OCP threshold, the voltage starts to curve down rather than immediately shutting off. The 2nd PDO shows a more dramatic current fold-back behavior compared to the 1st PDO. The 3rd PDO shows the voltage immediately shuts off when crossing the OCP threshold.

IV Curve

The USB Power Test App can also use the Granite River Labs USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester integrated with the GW Instek APS-7100 programmable AC power supply to compare the charger's power output vs power input so that power efficiency can be measured and compared to regulatory limits from United States of Energy (DOE) Level VI or European Union's CoC Tier 2 requirements. We can repeat the power efficiency tests for different PDO's, current load conditions, and different AC input ranges, allowing us to get a complete picture of power efficiency ranges across all different usage scenarios.
