The LG V30 was an early adopter of Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology, allowing the phone to be charged using USB Power Delivery 3.0 and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 based chargers. The Onpro UC-2PQC36 36W QC3.0 Wall Charger is a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 based charger supporting 18W output from each of its two USB Type-A ports, which we used to link up with the LG V30 to observe Qualcomm Quick Charge charging.
Using the GRL-USB-PD-C2 Compliance Test Solution App, we could clearly see how the Onpro charger delivers power to the LG phone when connected over a USB Type-A to Type-C cable. At initial 5 volts rail, the LG phone began pulling current to about 1.3 amps to start charging at around 6.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.3 amps). During the 5 volts rail, the phone was pulling rapid current in between .06-1.4 amps. When the voltage ramped up to a 8 volts rail after about 41 seconds of charging, higher current was pulled resulting in around 12.8 watts (8 volts @ 1.6 amps) charging which was also the max power observed. The phone then quickly dropped current down to near zero with almost no charging for a few seconds before resuming charging at about 12 watts (8 volts @ 1.5 amps). Charging then continued to happen at mostly around 12.1 watts (8.1 volts @ 1.5 amps) with more stable current and voltage. Through Qualcomm Quick Charge, the LG V30 has been consistently getting around max 12 watts sustained charging based on our internal testing which is lower than the max 16 watts offered by the LG 16W Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 charger that shipped with the phone.
