The Ricoh Theta S is best used with a smartphone like the Google Pixel phone. With the Ricoh Theta S App, you can view and transfer the 360 photos and videos taken by the Ricoh Theta S. The App also allows you to remotely control recording on the Ricoh Theta S. The App is also great for sharing 360 content with others.
After downloading and installing the Ricoh Theta S App from Google Play, you will first see all the 360 content already stored on the Google Pixel phone. If this is the first time using the Ricoh Theta S, you will just see some sample content already stored on the device.
To access the content taken by the Ricoh Theta S, you will need to select 'Cam Images' in the App's top menu.
If you then select 'How to connect to THETA', you'll be taken through some instructions on how to set up the Ricoh Theta S's WI-FI network and how to have the Google Pixel connect to that network.
After you have pressed the power button on the Ricoh Theta S, you'll need to press the WI-FI button to turn on the camera's WI-FI network.
You'll need to go to the Google Pixel's WI-FI settings menu to select the Ricoh Theta S's WI-FI network, and use the 8 digit numeric password that is embedded within the SSID after 'THETAXS'.
Once the Google Pixel is connected to the Ricoh Theta S's WI-FI network, you can see all the content that has been taken and stored on the camera. You can also select those that you want to copy to the Google Pixel. Note that transfer times can take a really long time over WI-FI especially when copying many large files so you may want to consider transferring them over USB instead to a PC or Mac.
In the setting menu, you can also choose to move (and delete the content from the camera) rather than just copying it.
If you select theta360, you can also view and share 360 content with other people.
If you want to change the Ricoh Theta S's settings, it's best to reconnect to the Internet rather than stay connected to the camera's Wi-FI network.
In Settings, you can set up your Facebook or Twitter accounts used to share your content, set up sleep modes and shutter volume, and access user guides.
The Google Pixel is also able to remotely control the Ricoh Theta S through the App. Just select the icon of the Theta camera on the bottom right of the App to start the remote control. There are two modes- video and camera mode.
In video mode, you won't actually see live streaming of the video being captured by the Ricoh Theta S. However, you can select the video size and press the Theta icon at the center of the App to start and stop video recording.
If you select the small camera icon on the top, you will go into camera mode. Here you can see a preview of the image and also select different camera settings.
If you select the menu icon on the top right, you can also change different Display mode, Shooting (e.g. normal vs interval), and Standard settings (e.g. image size).
Once you select press the Theta icon at the center of the App to take the picture, the 360 photo will automatically transfer to the Google Pixel.
The Ricoh Theta S App is easy to use, and allows the Google Pixel to work well with the Ricoh Theta S. However, care must be taken with choosing the VR headset if you want to watch 360 content since the Google Pixel's Daydream View VR headset does not work well with the Ricoh Theta S.
