The Intel NUC6i7KYK NUC Skull Canyon Kit Extends the Potential of a Mini PC

Intel's successful line of NUC (Next Unit of Computing) mini PCs have done well for the company, for various use cases where an ultra-small form factor computer might come in handy.

The highlight among the range of NUC kits is the high-end Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK mini PC. Powered by the 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, it features Intel's fastest Iris Pro Graphics 580 integrated graphics core, with 128MB of on-chip eDRAM (embedded DRAM) and the ability to boost to 1GHz. It is also equipped with a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 512GB NVMe SSD and 16GB of Crucial DDR4/2133MHz memory.

On top of that, the Intel NUC6i7KYK NUC Kit also packs in the latest Wireless-AC 8260 network card which provides 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2.

The Intel NUC6i7KYK NUC Ki comes in attractive compact packaging and we were eager to see what was inside the box.

Another side tells you what is included in the box, and indicates the product code and ID. 

Opening the box, you will immediately come across the black and gray NUC kit, with its signature huge skull emblazoned on the lid. 

Intel packs a surprising number of ports on the sides of its Intel NUC6i7KYK NUC Kit. You get a 3.5mm headphone jack, SD card slot, and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports – one with faster device charging – lining the system’s front face.

Behind the machine, you will see even more ports consisting of a full-sized HDMI, Thunderbolt 3, mini DisplayPort, two USB 3.1 Gen 1, Ethernet, another 3.5mm combo audio port, and DC power. That’s a great set of connections for any desktop, let alone a compact machine.

Accessories include a VESA mount and screws, as well as a 120W (19V @ 6.32A) power brick with a separate power cord. The quick-start manual gives you the necessary information to get you started and also guides you on how to add memory and SSDs to the unit.

The Intel NUC6i7KYK NUC Kit comes across as a decent compact PC that supports the Thunderbolt 3 technology, which is a good choice for those looking to get a budget-priced Thunderbolt 3-enabled PC.
