The Samsung Gear Fit is an inexpensive fitness tracker given its full touch screen and heart rate tracking features. It works ok with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge but how well does the Gear Fit work with other popular non-Samsung phones like the Huawei P8? Samsung has 2 main apps to work with your Gear Fit. S-Health monitors your health while the Gear Fit Manager manages the connection between your phone and the Gear Fit. While S-Health is available on Google Play, it has a few quirks. For example, for some strange reason, you need to have a SIM card on your phone in order to use the application.
However, without the Gear Fit Manager, there is no way to actually sync your data from your Gear Fit. Once you turn on the Gear Fit, it will ask you to download the Gear Fit Manager from Samsung Apps, and you can't go further until you've done so.
Unfortunately, the Gear Fit Manager is not available on Google Play and can only be downloaded from Samsung Apps which is not available on non-Samsung phones. There is a third party alternative like Open Fit, but that also failed to connect to the Gear Fit.
Initially Open Fit will not see the Gear Fit even though it's visible on Bluetooth.
Eventually though Open Fit does see the Gear Fit which you can then select.
Unfortunately, that's as far as you can get with the Huawei P8. If you press Connect, Open Fit is unable to finish connecting to the Gear Fit. Samsung doesn't explicitly advertise that Gear Fit only works with their own phones. So buyer beware if you think the Gear Fit is similar to the Fitbit which can work with various phones.
