There have been various reports with people having problems with getting the Roku Ultra to get 4K HDR working on Netflix so we decided to look further into the issue since we had similar problems getting 4K HDR content to play from the Xbox One S to the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class.
We connected the Roku Ultra to the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class, and made sure that ULTRA HD Deep Color was enabled on all the HDMI ports on the TV.
To enable 4K HDR on the Roku Ultra, we went to the Roku Settings menu. Under 'Display type', we changed the video resolution mode from '4K UHD TV' to '4K UHD TV HDR'.
There were initially some slight screen flickering in the connection but the flickering later went away and we were able to accept the display resolution.
Once the Roku's display mode was changed to 4K HDR, the LG TV detected the change and asked to do a restart of the TV.
However, after the TV restart, upon opening Netflix, neither 4K or HDR symbols showed up on 4K HDR enabled content like Marvel Daredevil.
Interesting enough, the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class still recognized a HDR connection from the Roku Ultra even though the Netflix content was not 4K HDR enabled.
We checked to make sure the Roku Ultra's software was up to date.
We then removed the Netflix App and re-added it.
However, despite reinstalling Netflix, the 4K HDR content was still showing up as HD only.
We tried to also change the Display type back from '4K UHD TV HDR' to '4K UHD TV' and then back again but again noticed the flickering which was this time much severe.
Identifying the flickering problem was due to using too long of a cable to support HDMI 2.0, we changed the cable to a much shorter one and the flickering stopped.
We then performed a system restart just in case.
After changing the cable, we at least were able to see 4K content from Netflix after the restart but still no HDR.
We then applied the same trick that we learned on the Xbox One S to get HDR working on Netflix. First we changed the Roku's Display Type resolution from '4K UHD TV HDR' to '4K UHD TV' and then back to '4K UHD TV HDR'. We then restarted the Roku Ultra and also turned off and on the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class.
This time after this reset, Netflix was able to successfully show the HDR content symbol. Since the Roku Ultra supports HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision, Netflix uses the HDR symbol instead of the Dolby Vision symbol.
When playing the HDR10 content, the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class briefly shows a HDR logo on the top right corner.
We can also confirm on the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class that 4K HDR BT.2020 is being used.
HDR should be a lot easier to set up for the average user, but fortunately we found a way to get HDR content to properly show up and play on the Roku Ultra to the LG B6 OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 65" Class.
