Sharing has never been quicker or easier than between the Dell XPS 13 9350 Laptop and Microsoft Lumia 950.
The Dell XPS 13 9350 is one of the first Windows PC notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 and the Microsoft Lumia 950 is the first Windows phone with the new USB Type-C connector. Both use Windows 10 which does a great job in connecting the devices together without any additional setup.
To connect the XPS 13 to the Lumia 950, you have a choice between the USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports on the XPS 13. The USB Type-C port on the XPS 13 supports up to 10 Gb/s and the USB Type-A port supports up to 5 Gb/s. However, since the Lumia 950 only supports 5 Gb/s, from a speed perspective it doesn't really matter which port you use.
If you want to save the XPS 13 USB Type-C port to connect faster Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) or USB 3.1 (10 Gb/s) devices, you should use a compliant USB Type-A to Type-C cable like the Belkin USB-A to USB-C Cable to connect the XPS 13 USB Type-A port to the Lumia 950.
As soon as you connect the XPS 13 to the Lumia, the Lumia 950 will be charged by the XPS 13 and on Windows 10 you can see the Lumia 950 easily identify itself.
One of the coolest things about connecting the Lumia 950 is that in XPS 13's Windows 10 File Explorer you can see it simply as another folder in your PC called 'Windows phone'. Unlike Android or Apple phones or tablets where file transfers are more cumbersome and restrictive, you can immediately start transferring files between a Windows PC and Windows Phone.
Unlike other phones with USB Type-C which only have USB 2.0 (480 Mb/s), the Lumia 950 supports USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gb/s) allowing you to quickly share large videos or presentations with the Dell XPS 13.
Windows 10 also has a Phone Companion App where you can easily monitor the Lumia 950's battery and storage.
The Microsoft Lumia 950 is a great way to extend what you are doing on the Dell XPS 13 9350 Laptop onto a portable smartphone. If you don't need to have access to a huge library of Apps and a heavy Microsoft Office user, definitely check out the Lumia 950 as an alternative to all the Android and Apple phones out there.
