How Different Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Chargers Behave Differently With the LG G5

The LG G5 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 over USB Type-C and while we've seen various compatibility issues with USB Power Delivery chargers, let's see how well it works with other Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 chargers from HTC 10 and Xiaomi Mi 5.

Note the oscilloscope screenshots below are taken while the LG G5 battery is at about 20% full.

First, LG G5 has the following voltage and current charging waveforms when charging with its own Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 based charger.  This charger claims supports 9 volts @ 1.8 amps and 5 volts @ 1.8 amps and we can see that the LG G5 actually pulls 9 volts @ 1.6 amps from it.

Next, using the Xiaomi Mi 5 Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Charger, we also see that there is similar behavior where the voltage reaches 9 volts while the current reaches 1.6 amps.  Strangely, this charger claims 5 volts @ 2 amps, 9 volts @ 1.2 amps, and 12 volts @ 1 amps so we are seeing that the actual current pulled of 1.6 amps exceeds the 1.2 amps Xiaomi is claiming the charger can supply at 9 volts.

Interestingly with the HTC 10's Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Charger, the voltage reaches 9 volts while the current only hits 1.1 amps.  The HTC 10 charger claims support of 5 volts @ 2.5 amps, 9 volts @ 1.7 amps, and 12 volts @ 1.25 amps so the actual current pulled of 1.1 amps is less than the 1.7 amps declared by the charger.  You would think that HTC's charger should have a similar behavior as LG's charger given they support similar current levels at 9 volts, but they actually behave quite differently.
