Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Now Supports USB Type-C for USB Power Delivery Based Charging

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is an upgrade from the 2016 model to have a USB Type-C connector, allowing rapid charging using USB Power Delivery 2.0 technology, which is also similar to the higher end Samsung Galaxy S8. Other than supporting USB Power Delivery, the  Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) also uses its own Samsung proprietary charging scheme to quickly charge the phone through the phone's USB Type-C connector.

Like the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy A5 (2017) is shipped with the Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging Charger to provide 15 watts Adaptive Fast Charging for the phone. The Galaxy A5 (2017) only supports USB 2.0 speeds over its USB Type-C interface which means it can't take advantage of DisplayPort Alternate Mode to output video. 

The adoption of USB Type-C and removal of the USB Micro-B connector that was used in the 2016 model is one of the biggest improvements  on the Galaxy A5 (2017) which is great value for the mid range phone.

Using the USB Power Delivery Compliance C2 Tester from Granite River Labs to run just a subset of the full USB Power Delivery compliance test suite, we can see that the Galaxy A5 (2017) supports a fixed PDO of 2.5 watts (5 volts @ .5 amps) and programmable power from 2.5 watts to 4.5 watts (5-9 volts @ .5 amps) for charging. Note some compliance failures were observed.
