Besides Meizu's owned mCharge 4.0 proprietary charging, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus phone additionally supports USB Power Delivery technology to allow rapid charging over USB Type-C with other compatible chargers. Here we find out if the USB Power Delivery based Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 can be used as a charging option for the Meizu phone while at 1% battery level.

To see what's going on with USB Power Delivery between the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 and the Meizu Pro 7 Plus, we use the Granite River Labs GRL-USB-PD-A1 test software to capture the USB Power Delivery protocol transactions. At first Innergie keeps on advertising  that it can support 4 different power profiles: 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 36 watts (12 volts @ 3 amps), 45 watts (15 volts @ 3 amps), and 45 watts (20 volts @ 2.25 amps) over the USB Type-C connector.

We then observe the Meizu Pro 7 Plus initially requests only 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) which the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45  subsequently accepts multiple times.

Over several soft and hard resets, we also see that both charger and phone keep on repeating the same initial power negotiation cycle.

Later in the negotiation, the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 can also be seen to continuously display its source capabilities as earlier advertised.

Here we actually verify that the Meizu Pro 7 Plus pulls an eventual current of about 1.2 amps from the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 while at 5 volts, with the phone being powered on and 1% charged.

Starting with 5 volts at plugin, the current is initially pulled at around 0.5 amps, which then quickly drops to zero. During multiple soft and hard resets and repeated power cycle, the current stays mostly at 0 amps while the voltage rapidly bounces up and down. After 10 seconds, as the voltage goes back up to 5 volts, the current gradually steps up to reach about 1.2 amps for the phone to draw around 6 watts (5 volts @ 1.2 amps) of charging power.

The Meizu Pro 7 Plus can charge with the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 using USB Power Delivery, but at a much slower rate than using its own 25 watts based Meizu charger as reviewed here.
