In the past, it was harder to find DisplayPort monitors which supported the mini DisplayPort connector found on most Macs.  You generally had to use a mini Display Port to standard DisplayPort adapter cable to connect to most of external PC monitors that supported DisplayPort.  If you wanted to stay with a monitor style that matched Apple's and used the same mini DisplayPort connector, you generally had to stay with Apple's own displays like the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

USB Type-C has the potential to change all that.

The Apple MacBook (Early 2015) was the first Mac released by Apple to support the new USB Type-C.  After about a year, the LG 27 inch Class Ultra HD IPS 4K 27UD88-W Monitor was also the first monitor released by LG with USB Type-C, and was also the first USB Type-C monitor that supported 4K.

Fortunately, the LG 27 inch Class Ultra HD IPS 4K 27UD88-W Monitor style-wise looks well-matched with the Apple MacBook, and uses the exact same USB Type-C connector.

In addition, unlike the previous mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt-based displays, you can now power the Mac using the same USB Type-C cable used to provide display functionality.  With the same cable, while supporting power and display, your MacBook can also simultaneously access any USB device connected to the USB Type-A ports available on the LG Display.

Here is how to get 4K resolution from the LG 27 inch Class Ultra HD IPS 4K 27UD88-W Monitor with the MacBook.

You will see that the Macbook by default sets a resolution of 1920x1080 on the LG monitor.

To see additional resolutions for the monitor, while holding down the option key, click Scaled.  Here you can select 3840X2160 to get 4K resolution on the LG display.

Given that the Apple MacBook (Early 2015) has only one port which is used for everything (power, USB, display), the LG 27 inch Class Ultra HD IPS 4K 27UD88-W Monitor is a perfect companion to the MacBook.  When you are parked at your desk and want a larger 4K screen, access to more USB ports, all while charging your MacBook, this LG display is definitely worth the consideration.
