The Samsung's DeX Station can be charged using either Samsung's own Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC) chargers or USB Power Delivery chargers. Here we see how well the Samsung's DeX Station supports charging with the Samsung 25W USB-C Fast Charging Wall Charger through Samsung’s proprietary AFC scheme when being docked with the Samsung Galaxy S8 phone and connected over HDMI and USB.  

Note that the Samsung 25W USB-C Fast Charging Wall Charger supports the following power profiles- 25 watts (12 volts @ 2.1 amps), 15 watts (9 volts @ 1.67 amps), and 10 watts (5 volts @ 2 amps) over its USB Type-A connector.

For starters, we first connect the Samsung 25W USB-C Fast Charging Wall Charger directly to the DeX Station using a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, with the Samsung Galaxy S8 (at 2% charged) attached on to the dock. At the same time, we also link up the DeX to a HDMI TV and connect the Granite River Labs GRL-USB-PD-A1 power analyzer to the dock’s USB Type-A port.

Using the Granite River Labs GRL-USB-PD-A1 test software to evaluate power charging performance, we can see initially the voltage starts off at 5 volts while the DeX Station pulls only about 0.1 amps current. As the voltage goes up to reach around 11.7 volts, the DeX pulls higher current to about 0.6 amps to support charging the Samsung Galaxy S8 phone. Also in between, quick current spikes can be seen to randomly occur. The DeX later pulls even higher current to consume more power averaging at 12.9 watts (11.7 volts @ 1.1 amps) to support both HDMI and USB connections. However after the next 20 seconds, the current pulled rapidly drops back down to 0.6 amps at 11.7 volts and then further down to the initial 0.1 amps at 5 volts.

While the DeX Station can charge fine during the initial stage to achieve close to 13W, it doesn’t really charge after that by drawing only 0.5W which is much too low to support any charging between the DeX and Samsung charger. We conclude that the DeX Station unfortunately can’t really work with the Samsung 25W USB-C Fast Charging Wall Charger which is quite surprising given they are both from Samsung.
