Rather than coming up with a new operating system, Apple lets you update your Sierra based Mac with the new macOS High Sierra. This latest update will see it targeting mainly the Mac's core functions and common apps, which it will also be available for free.

Users can expect to get a new file system with the macOS High Sierra which offers the Apple File System (APFS). APFS is made to replace the current macOS Sierra's HFS+ file system to offer better file management. It uses a 64-bit platform that not only could improve storage capabilities and security but also allows you to quickly copy files or view file sizes. This new file system is already available starting with iOS 10.3.

macOS High Sierra will also allow you to easily manage 4K video on your Mac through the latest High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or H.625 video standard. Compared to Sierra's H.264 version, it claims to be able to compress up to 40% more video with the newer standard, so you could save more storage space. You could also stream 4K video more easily using HEVC.

While Sierra has built in the Metal graphics technology, the newer High Sierra will have Metal 2 integrated for improved graphics. Additionally it also promises to add on machine learning, virtual reality, and external GPU support (through Thunderbolt 3) among other capabilities. This would be especially useful for developers who want to be able to design new VRs on their Macs, using either 2017's iMac with Retina 5K, iMac Pro or a compatible Mac connected to an external GPU.

macOS High Sierra can also be expected to make certain upgrades to widely used apps on your Mac like Photos, Safari, Mail, Apple Music with integrated Siri, and iCloud. Just in case you still have a 32-bit app running on your Mac, do note that it will not be compatible with High Sierra which only supports 64 bits.

With all the benefits as promised by High Sierra, it will be interesting to find out how this new macOS can extend the capabilities of your Mac later this year.
