How the ZTE Nubia Z17 Phone Works With Other Dual-Role Power based USB PD Devices like the Huawei P10

The Huawei P10 can use either USB Power Delivery or Huawei's own SuperCharge based chargers through its USB Type-C port. But if the phone desperately needs a charge, you can also try connecting it to another phone like the Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ based Nubia Z17  by ZTE supporting either USB Power Delivery or Qualcomm Quick Charge. That is if you don't mind sacrificing the other phone's battery while it supplies power to your Huawei phone.

Note that unlike a lot of Android phones out there, the Nubia Z17 doesn't provide options for how to deal with USB charging when connected to a computer or phone like the Huawei P10 that can support charging in both directions. While the Nubia Z17 can also support charging in both directions, when directly connected to the Huawei P10, the Nubia Z17 automatically just supports charging out. This means that the Nubia Z17 can only act as a power bank and charging other phones rather than being able to be charged itself. This is in direct contrast to behavior on the iPhone 8 which can only be charged over USB Power Delivery (rather than providing power to other USB Power Delivery based devices).

Here we see how with 10% charge remaining the Nubia Z17 acts as a power bank to provide USB Power Delivery charging to the Huawei P10 on a 9% battery when connected using a USB Type-C to Type-C cable in between. On the Huawei P10, also select the option to charge the phone under the phone's USB charging settings.

As observed from the USB Power Delivery negotiations, the Nubia Z17 starts to offer a single 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) power profile to the Huawei P10.

We then see the Nubia Z17 rejects the Huawei P10's request to pull the 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps).

When the Nubia Z17 again declares its initial 7.5 watts (5 volts @ 1.5 amps) power profile, the Huawei P10 still requests the same power  but gets rejected again by the Nubia phone. We also observe the same cycle repeating during the negotiation process which the Nubia phone won't accept any power request from the Huawei phone.

From the power graph, the Huawei P10 draws only about 2.45 watts (4.9 volts @ 0.5 amps) while the phone is 9% charged and turned on. This power is too low for the Huawei phone to charge quickly with the Nubia Z17 on a 10% battery but at least the Huawei P10 can still get charged which may come in handy when there's no access to any AC power source.
