Mi 6

What happens if you use a third party charging option like the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 to charge the Xiaomi Mi 6? Since both support USB Power Delivery technology, we use the GRL-USB-PD-A1 test software by Granite River Labs to capture the USB Power Delivery protocol transactions.

On a side note, the Mi 6 likely implements Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology since it not only supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 but also Qualcomm Quick Charge over its USB Type-C connector.

From the software, we can confirm there is USB Power Delivery negotiation occurring between the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 and the Mi 6 phone when connected over USB Type-C. Initially, the Innergie charger first repeats that it supports 4 different PDO's (Power Data Objects): 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 36 watts (12 volts @ 3 amps), 45 watts (15 volts @ 3 amps), and 45 watts (20 volts @ 2.25 amps), with only 2% battery charge left on the phone.

The Mi 6 initially only requests 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps) of charging from the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 which it then accepts.

After complying to a Discover Identity request by the charger, the phone goes on to request and establish 36 watts (12 volts @ 3 amps) of faster charging with the charger.

We also observe from the power graph that the eventual current pulled by the Mi 6 is about 1.4 amps at 12 volts with the phone being 2% charged and switched on.

When first plugged in, the phone starts off pulling current up to about 3 amps at an initial voltage of 5 volts. After few seconds while the phone is active and requesting 36 watts, the current rapidly drops down before resuming quickly to 1.4 amps as the voltage rises to almost 12 volts. The phone then goes on to charge by drawing power at around 16.8 watts.

The Mi 6 supports USB Power Delivery well with the Innergie PowerGear USB-C 45 and achieves a power level similar to using its own Quick Charge charger.
