With USB technology, there is typically only enough bandwidth to support the basic storage functions. With the Thunderbolt 3 based AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station, not only do you have fast access to storage using Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) technology, but also a docking station with Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gb/s) Type-A, SD card, and a standard DisplayPort 1.2 port. Since the AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, while one port is used to connect to a Thunderbolt 3 PC or Mac, the other port can be used to daisy chain another Thunderbolt 3 peripheral or connect a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s) device, DisplayPort 1.2 monitor or HDMI/VGA monitor through a USB Type-C adapter. The AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station also provides 27 watts to charge your Thunderbolt 3 based PC or Mac.

The AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station is designed elegantly and conveniently places the power button near the SD card slot in the front.

The majority of the ports are at the back of the AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station.

You can manually set the RAID configuration by rotating the arrow in the direction of SPAN, RAID 0, RAID 1, and Non-RAID. It's easy to use this hardware RAID method to set the RAID configurations versus trying to create a soft RAID through the operating system.

There is also a fan on/off switch although there is warning not to leave the fan turned off for more than half an hour.

You can easily remove the outer casing of the AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station by manually twisting the two large screws at the back of the casing with your fingers.

Once the casing is removed, you can insert two SATA Gen 3 drives to be used in your RAID setup.

The AKiTiO Thunder3 RAID Station is a great value by combining fast RAID storage and docking features into a single product and demonstrates the power that Thunderbolt 3 raw bandwidth provides.
