The Google Pixel Phone and the Google Pixel XL Phone are Google's first foray into the phone market where it now completely owns important design decisions rather than using partners like Huawei, HTC, LG, and Samsung to help develop, product, and sell its Nexus line.  Google now owns solely owns design and sales of the Pixel Phones (with HTC just doing the manufacturing of the phone).

Unlike in the past where Google Pixel branded products were initially only sold in lower volumes through Google's own store and acted more like reference designs for other makers to copy, the Google Pixel Phone and the Google Pixel XL Phone are now shipping and can be ordered not only through Google's online store but through various third party resellers on Amazon (Click to check Amazon Prices for Pixel XL Phone or Amazon Prices for Pixel Phone which allow for international shipment).

With the Google Pixel finally shipping, we received ours directly from the Google Store.  When it arrived, the Google Pixel also came with the Project Fi (see our experiences with Project Fi in different parts of Asia) even though we hadn't ordered it.  With the Google Pixel and Project Fi combined, Google now seeks to own both the mobile phone service, phone design, and operating system in a way that even Apple hasn't been able to do.

Unlike Apple, the Google has taken a more basic packaging approach with the Google Pixel similar to that found on other Android phones and less elegant than what is typically found on flagship phones.

The Google Pixel contains accessories like a USB Type-C charger, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, a USB Type-C to Type-C cable, and USB Type-C to Type-A adapter, a SIM removal pin, and various quick guides and reminders of the Google Pixel's new features.

Unlike earlier USB Type-C Android phones which shipped with a Qualcomm Quick Charge or proprietary charging scheme based AC adapter, the Google Pixel's charger supports USB Power Delivery at 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps) and 18 watts (9 volts @ 2 amps).

The Google Pixel is stylishly designed and comfortable to hold given its smooth edges.

We'll next be looking at how well the Google Pixel works with various accessories and peripherals, especially those related USB Power Delivery.
