By focusing on just the networking layer, the Thread Group showed at CES 2017 its ability to work with various application layers including Google's Weave, Zigbee's dotdot, and Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF). Thread has the benefit of having strong support from Nest and Google, and its low power scalable mesh networking protocol holds a lot of promise to become the intelligent plumbing inside a lot of smart home and commercial installations.
Thread products are still being developed so most of the demonstrations were from chip companies like TI and NXP showing off their Thread reference designs.
Hopefully over time more Thread devices will come into the market, providing an alternative to WI-FI, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Z-Wave inside the home.
