The Anker PowerPort+ 5 USB-C (click here for Amazon pricing) is one of the charging sources that adopt the USB Power Delivery technology supported by the 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2016). We will see how this third party charger provides power to the Mac.

Using the software from Granite River Labs, we will capture the USB Power Delivery Protocol transactions between these two devices.

Seen here are the power profiles from the Anker PowerPort+ 5 USB-C: 15 watts (5 volts @ 3 amps), 27 watts (9 volts @ 3 amps) and 45 watts (15 volts @ 3 amps) over the USB Type-C connector.

The 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2016) then calls 45 watts (15 volts @ 3 amps) of charging power from the Anker PowerPort+ 5 USB-C.

We observe on an oscilloscope that the charger delivers around 15 volts @ 0.8 amps to the Mac when fully charged.

Although the 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2016) can be sufficiently powered using an external charging source like the Anker PowerPort+ 5 USB-C, it still works best with its own Apple 61W USB-C Power Adapter
