New Dell XPS 13 with Thunderbolt 3 Cuts Boundaries with Infinity Screen

Since its first Thunderbolt 3 enabled 9350 series, Dell has followed up with the new XPS 13 9365 supporting Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) over the USB Type-C connector, with USB Power Delivery 2.0 and 4K video over DisplayPort 1.2. The Dell XPS 13 9365's USB-C ports also come integrated with Dell's own custom built USB PowerShare feature which enables power to be used from the battery to charge external USB devices. The USB PowerShare can be configured on the PC to allocate a portion of the battery's capacity for charging (more details here).

Being the first 2-in-1 to offer the InfinityEdge display, the Dell XPS 13 9365 boasts a virtually borderless edge-to-edge view on its 13.3” FHD 1920 x 1080 touch screen backed by Corning Gorilla Glass NBT. The display even comes with an optional 276 ppi 3200 x 1800 UltraSharp QHD+ resolution for better clarity. At 2.7 pounds, the lightweight laptop can be folded over a 360-degree hinge to be used in the form of a tablet, stand, tent or laptop.

The Dell XPS 13 9365 series is powered by the 7th Gen Intel Core i5 and i7 processors along with its own Dynamic Power Mode feature for additional processing power. Running on Windows 10, the laptop comes with a max 256GB SSD and up to 16GB LPDDR3 1866MHz memory. It also features a widescreen HD (720p) webcam as well as Microsoft Hello compliant fingerprint reader.

Two USB Type-C ports are available on the Dell XPS 13 9365, where one is enabled with Thunderbolt 3 (4 PCIe Gen 3 lanes with PowerShare/DC-In and DisplayPort) and the other supports only USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gbs/s) with PowerShare, DC-In and DisplayPort. The Thunderbolt 3 based USB-C port provides USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s) and Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) for high speed data transfers. There is enough bandwidth on the USB Type-C port to support two daisy chained 4K@60Hz displays over DisplayPort 1.2.

Measuring at max 7.8 x 11.98 x 0.54 inches, the laptop connects over 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2. It also includes a MicroSD card reader, a Noble security lock slot, and a primary 4-cell (46 Whr) battery that can last up to 15 hours usage-wise, with an optional Dell Hybrid Adapter + Power Bank accessory. 

Other than the 2-in-1 form factor, the Dell XPS 13 9365 may seem to have a lot in common with its Dell XPS 13 9360 predecessor. While both share the 7th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, performance level varies between the 9365's i7-7Y75 (up to 3.6 GHz) and 9360's i7-7500U (up to 3.5 GHz). Also, the Dell XPS 13 9365 offers a higher RAM of up to 16GB in comparison to the max 8GB on the Dell XPS 13 9360.

For the InfinityEdge display, the Dell XPS 13 9360 features a QHD+ 3200 x 1800 max screen resolution while the Dell XPS 13 9365 only has up to FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution. Connectivity-wise, the Dell XPS 13 9365 edges over the 9360 by offering two USB-C ports instead of only a single USB-C port on the 9360. The 9365's Thunderbolt 3 enabled USB-C port offers a higher bandwidth with 4 PCIe Gen 3 lanes than the 2 PCIe Gen 3 lanes from the 9360's Thunderbolt 3.
