Thunderbolt 3 based HP Elitebook Folio Notebook PC (W8H05PA) Uses a USB Power Delivery Compliant HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor

The HP Elitebook Folio Notebook PC (W8H05PA) supports Thunderbolt 3 which leverages USB Type-C's capabilities to support 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt links, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s), DisplayPort 1.2, and USB Power Delivery.  The slim HP Elitebook Folio Notebook PC (W8H05PA) supports a couple Thunderbolt 3 enabled USB Type-C ports and 3.5 mm audio jack similar to the Apple MacBook (Early 2016) design.  Unlike the Apple MacBook which only has 1 USB Type-C port, on the HP Elitebook Folio Notebook PC (W8H05P1) you can use one Type-C port to charge the laptop while using the other USB Type-C port to attach storage or display peripherals.

To charge the HP Elitebook Folio Notebook PC (W8H05P1), HP has its own USB Type-C based HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor that comes with the notebook.  Note as of this review's writing, the HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor is still not sold separately by HP.

Here's how we test the HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor to see how well it meets the USB Power Delivery specifications.

To see what's going on we use Granite River Labs USB Type-C Test Controller and software to capture the USB Power Delivery timing, static and dynamic electrical capabilities.

The HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor supports three Power delivery objects (PDO's)-10 watts (5 volts @ 2 amps), 36 watts (12 volts @ 3 amps) and 45 watts (15 volts @ 3 amps).

To check whether this HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor is compliant to the USB Power Delivery Specifications, we performed test cases as per the USB-IF Power Delivery compliance plan.

We tested the supported PDO's by changing the load in steps and found that voltage and current are within the USB Type-C Power Delivery Specifications.

As we see from the screenshots above, whenever the GRL USB Type-C Test Controller requests for a change in the PDO, the HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor provides respective PDO within the time limit.

As we can see, the HP 45W Smart AC Adaptor passed all test cases and meets the USB Type-C Power Delivery Specifications.
